Summary:

Point Broadband is looking for an energetic and results-oriented Manager of Systems and Software Engineering. This role will lead the Systems & Software Engineering team, managing, and optimizing server infrastructure, deploying cutting-edge virtualization and container technologies, developing innovative applications and tools, and focusing on network automation and intelligence efforts. The manager will ensure that the team's software solutions meet the highest standards of performance, security, and usability while maintaining a collaborative environment. This role involves partnering with subject matter experts and various teams to deliver timely and effective solutions aligned with Point Broadband's technology architecture direction.

This leadership position will be responsible for representing the team and their responsibilities to other business units while managing resource allocation. The manager will ensure the team focuses on the right priorities, delivering quality services that meet business requirements. Additionally, the role involves preparing capital and operating budgets, vendor management, and participating in high-level project and resource planning meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Server Infrastructure Management: Oversee the setup, configuration, and maintenance of physical and virtual servers
  • Operating Systems Management: Manage and ensure the reliability of Linux, Windows, and other operating systems
  • Virtualization & Container Deployment: Implement and manage virtualization and container technologies such as VMware, Docker, and Kubernetes
  • Application & Tool Development: Design and build applications and tools to enhance services and internal operations
  • Network Automation & Intelligence: Lead efforts focused on network automation and network intelligence throughout the service provider environment
  • Software Evaluation: Assess and ensure current software meets performance, security, and usability requirements
  • Performance Monitoring: Track and ensure optimal server performance
  • System Updates & Patches: Regularly update software and apply security patches
  • Issue Resolution: Address server performance issues and system failures promptly
  • Automation & Integration: Develop scripts and tools for process automation and system integration
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed documentation of system setups and changes
  • Training & Documentation: Create documentation and provide training for developed software
  • Collaboration: Coordinate closely with architects, technology leads, and business project teams to fulfill responsibilities effectively
  • Ensures the reliability and continuous operation of systems, achieving 24x7 service availability through proactive leadership
  • Enhances inter-departmental collaboration, effectively communicating to resolve infrastructure issues and improve operational efficiencies.

Qualifications and Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or equivalent military or technical experience
  • 5 to 7 years of engineering experience in server and software management
  • Certifications in relevant technologies (e.g., VMware, Docker, Kubernetes) are a plus
  • Strong knowledge of server infrastructure, virtualization, and container technologies
  • Proven experience in application and tool development
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to manage resources effectively
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interface with senior executives
  • Known for identifying, resolving, and preempting problems efficiently; skilled in analyzing complex information and crafting innovative solutions
  • Experience in creating and managing both departmental and project-oriented budgets
  • Experience with system administration and certifications in Linux, Windows, and other network-related fields
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, C++, or other relevant languages. Experience with scripting languages like Bash, PowerShell, Java, Python, PHP, Golang, Perl, or Ruby is also desirable
  • Proven track record in developing and implementing innovative software and systems strategies
