Summary:

The primary duties of this position will include fiber optic splicing, maintaining fiber optic infrastructure, operating equipment (bucket truck, digger, etc.), maintaining DC Power systems, electrical grounding, environmental monitoring, and field service support of telecommunications equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include troubleshooting all levels of infrastructure problems, as well as effectively completing and assisting with repairs by utilizing tools provided by the company (OTDR, light meters, etc.). Additional skills, abilities and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Repair damage to the fiber optic network infrastructure
  • Build and construct outside plant projects effectively and in accordance with company standards
  • Responsible for field service troubleshooting of electronic fiber optic equipment and carrier circuits in conjunction with Network Engineering group and vendors
  • Required to accurately complete documentation and forms for LCC cabinets, add splitters for new growth, maintain LCC’s and complete all documentation as directed
  • Must be able to perform Level 1 mapping and documentation
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to professionally represent Point Broadband with vendors and other partners
  • Troubleshooting of all aspects of the network from the access shelf (PON) and switch (AE) to the customer point of demarcation
  • Ability to lead emergency outage restorations from first call to resolution
  • Ability to plan and lead a job from beginning to resolution with little to no supervision
  • Accurately read and interpret splicing documents, splicing engineer packets, and network plan designs
  • Expert knowledge using fusion splicing equipment
  • Expert knowledge using Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR)
  • Knowledge of Google Earth files
  • Knowledge of Fast Reporter software
  • Experience using Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Must possess strong problem solving, decision making, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and follow written procedures
  • Ability to work from an aerial lift truck and/or ladder
  • Ability to use light source and power meters
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment background check and drug tests as required

Work schedules will occasionally rotate and change. Must be able to work outside of normal business hours as needed. Travel may be required. Subject to being on-call during evenings/overnight, weekends and holidays.

  • Able to work independently

  • Periodically update state ‘one-call’ map for locate purposes

Education/Experience:

  • Technical degree in line work or fiber engineering or the equivalent in training and/or work experience preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated work experience

  • Ability to lift and carry 75 LB ladder and climb poles and ladders safely
  • Must be comfortable working at extensive heights (i.e. on poles)
  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy and/or cumbersome objects and tools
